PCIC snubs IGP for disrupting access to information

TOBA TEK SINGH: Punjab Chief Information Commissioner (PCIC) Mahboob Qadir Shah has directed the inspector general of Punjab police to guarantee the timely provision of information and prevent any harassment of citizens seeking information from the department under the RTI Act, 2013.

The PCIC’s intervention was prompted by an incident involving Naeem Ahmed, of Faisalabad, who had filed a request for information regarding police encounters that occurred in Faisalabad between 2018 and 2022.

Naeem told Dawn that he was summoned in an inappropriate and harassing manner by Faisalabad DSP Legal after submitting his request. Upon receiving the complaint about the DSP’s behaviour, the PCIC instructed the DSP to immediately withdraw the summons and issue a written unconditional apology to the applicant within three days.

The PCIC said that failure to comply would result in necessary action being taken against the DSP under Section 15 of the RTI Act.

KILLED: A man allegedly murdered his two elder brothers and critically injured his grandmother over a monetary dispute on Wednesday in Chak Chota Rasoolpura in the Khurrianwala area.

The police said Ali Haider opened indiscriminate fire on them, resulting in serious injuries to hisbrothers, Zaib Ali and Muhammad Suhail, and his grandmother, Muhammad Bibi. Both Zaib and Suhail succumbed to their injuries instantly, while Muhammad Bibi was admitted to the Khurrianwala rural health centre.

The police are after the suspect.

MURDER: A man who was involved in the murder of former Lahore High Court Bar Association president Nasrullah Warraich 12 years ago was axed to death by unidentified people in Faisalabad’s Chak 265 RB Naag Kalan on Tuesday night in his house.

The Dijkot police said that Zeeshan Anwar Gill was asleep alone when the suspects climbed up into his house and fled after killing him.

He had remained in jail for eight years, and was released on bail four years ago.

He was currently running a grocery shop in his village.

APPROVAL: The Punjab Planning and Development Working Party has approved the Rs1.28 billion Abdullahpur Flyover-Exit-Ramp project in Faisalabad during its recent meeting.

This mega project holds great significance for the urban development sector, aiming to ensure a seamless traffic flow in the area.

Muhammad Asif Chaudhry, director-general of the Faisalabad Development Authority announced the project’s approval and said the project spans a length of 0.75km and a width of 32 feet, with a planned connection to Chak Jhuma Road.

He added that the project would commence soon, with a stipulated completion period of one year. However, the FDA aims to expedite the construction and aims to complete it within eight months, subject to the availability of funds.
