From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1948: Seventy-five years ago: Call for news blackout

THE Press Advisory Committee and the Standing Committee of the Pakistan Newspapers Editors’ Conference (Sind Region) has requested newspapers in Pakistan to suspend publication of Sind Government news and close for one day … as a protest against the action of the Sind Government in banning publication of Al-wahid for six months … ignoring the recommendations of the committee. The following joint statement has been issued by the Press Advisory Committee and the Standing Committee of the PNEC (Sind Region):

On May 7, a meeting of the Sind editors was called at the request of the Sind Government for the purpose of electing a Press Advisory Committee of six whose function would be to advise the Government on matters relating to the conduct of the Press in Sind. The committee was duly constituted representing all sections of newspapers. … Soon after the reshuffle of portfolios the Sindhi Muslim daily Al-wahid was suspended and its editor confined to prison. The Sind Observer was also banned. In neither case was intimation of their proposed action given by the Government to the Committee.
