From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1973: Fifty Years Ago: Sind University closed

KARACHI: The Provincial Government has ordered the closure of Sind University for at least two weeks — from May 2 to May 14 — in view of the “friction caused amongst the students” following the Convocation Day incident and in order to “prevent any further tension”. Provided that “things return to normal” … the University will reopen on May 15, the Sind Education Minister … told a news conference… .

The Minister said in a prepared statement that the “Sind University incident has resulted in friction amongst its students and their feelings are said to be running very high. It seems, therefore, advisable, in order to prevent any further tension amongst the students that the Sind University be closed for a period of two weeks at least, to allow the feelings to cool down”… . — Staff reporter

[Meanwhile, as reported by our staff reporter from Karachi,] Karachi houses will go without milk from today [May 1] as City’s milkmen went on an indefinite strike in protest against the rise in the wholesale rate of milk at the Landhi Cattle Colony. The bulk milk suppliers have raised the price from Rs 55 to Rs 60 per maund. A meeting of the Milksellers Welfare decided to remain on strike till the bulk suppliers revised their decision… .
