Old Ravians elect office-bearers

LAHORE: The Government College University on Monday elected its Old Ravians Union’s executive committee for 2023–24.

Lawyer Syed Tayyab Hussain Rizvi was elected president. He secured 674 votes, while Mian Muhammad Ashfaq Mohlan and Dr Farhan Ebadat Yar Khan got 652 and 36 votes, respectively. Due to the minor difference in votes, a recounting was requested, which Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Asghar Zaidi allowed, but the result remained in favor of Mr Rizvi.

Bhutta and Dr Haleema Afridi were elected as vice presidents, male and female, respectively.

Sultan Nisar Soraya was elected secretary-general of the union with 819 votes, while Muhammad Asif Ali Khan secured 512 votes. Zohaib Saleem Butt and Sadia Sarwar secured the positions of joint secretaries.

Dr Abrar Ilahi Malik, Mehmood Saeed Rawn, Mian Sohail Anwar, Syed Tahir Hussain, Hafiz M Nigar Ahmad, and Muhammad Ammar Saleem were elected executive members in their respective decades.

Prof Zaidi congratulated the new executive committee of the union and expressed his hope that they would actively participate in the progress and development of their alma mater, especially in the eight projects GCU had initiated this year on the completion of 20 years of the university.

He added that all Old Ravians are an integral part of the GCU and hopefully will continue to play their role in the development of their alma mater.

Prof Zaidi emphasized the important role that alumni unions play in the growth and development of their respective universities throughout the world.

He encouraged Mr Rizvi and his team to work closely with the university administration to identify areas where they could contribute to the betterment of the institution.

He also highlighted the valuable experience and insights that the alumni can provide to current students and faculty members, and urged the Old Ravians to continue to support the university in its mission to provide quality education and contribute to society at large.
