MADRAS: The publication of a report in certain Tamil papers that Muslims dressed as Sikhs had attempted to murder Pandit Nehru at Amritsar (which first appeared in the New Delhi Hindustan Times, but was later proved to be false by the identification of the persons concerned as Sikhs), was the immediate cause of Hindu attacks on Muslims at Thiruppurankundram in Madras. One person was stabbed on Jan 31.

At Rajapalayam 29 houses were burnt and 27 houses and four shops looted. Fifteen persons were also injured. The damage to properties as a result of burning and looting is estimated at about Rs 2,00,000. Properties worth Rs 6,000 were recovered from the arrested persons. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, it was also reported that] The affairs of some of Karachi’s educational institutions are in a sad state, the D.J. Sind Science College being among them. The College has now on its rolls only Muslim students, the Hindu students having migrated. … Some of the members of the staff have also left while many others have sent away their families and are only marking time. — Dawn Special Correspondent
