Horse-racing: Silent Angel poised to make amends

KARACHI, Jan 7: Silent Angel, a three-year-old colt, who was beaten to second slot by mare Bang On Target in his last meeting on Dec 25, is poised to make amends when the Winter Gymkhana race meeting takes place at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.

Drawn in the concluding six furlongs race of the programme alongside 12 contenders, he starts as our days’ best and is expected to repeat his recent past winning performance.

Prior to his last appearance, he was piloted home thrice, including two in a row by jockey Ghulam Shabbir II. The owner however, replaced Shabbir with Abdul Aziz.

He should be chased by Chaleswan Chur and Fakhar-e-Sanghar for the places.

A card of eight races with six going over five furlongs and the remaining to six has been chalked out for the day. The first race begins at 12.30 pm.

Filly Silent Love who has been off-colour in the past few outings, should overcome her bad patch by winning the opener. However, to accomplish the challenging task, she would have to overcome some stiff opposition from Bank Manager, Baby Tabassum and Afzaal Prince. They secured top three positions in the similar order last Sunday.

Six-year-old bay horse, King Of The Field, should pick up the spoils in the following event which has a shortest field of eight runners.

He failed to grab a position and was among those who featured in the last Sunday meeting. Thwarting his bid to win would be bay horse Gold Tip and mare Choti Duniya.

Drawn in a pack of 15 runners, six-year-old bay horse, Silver City, who was relegated to second place on Dec 25 with Waheed Baran in the saddle, is fancied to clinch the third race.

Filly, Miss Maree and colt, Jawan Bakht should settle it out for the remaining two places.

The fourth race should see seven-year-old Daruwala making amends for his loss to Canon Ball by four lengths on Dec 25.

Also in contention among the 18 contestants were Al Jarrar and New Ferrari.

Despite her unimpressive run, Sonia, a 10-year-old mare, is fancied to win the fifth race going over a distance of five furlongs. She should be chased by Leo Again and Desperado.

Baba Jani, a four-year-old colt, is tipped to make it two in a row by winning the sixth race. He was home by one and a three quarter length on Jan 1. He should be followed by Al Zarrar and Lucky Step.

Filly, Voo Doo Doll should run away with the honours in the seventh race of the programme.
