Meanwhile, local elders on Saturday urged the State Bank of Pakistan to direct the commercial banks in the Orakzai tribal district to issue people ATM cards so they could withdraw cash from anywhere without any hassle.

Speaking at a meeting, Misal Khan of Awami National Party, Munir Orakzai, Khyal Zaman Orakzai and others said that a majority of people in the district were government servants, pensioners and businessmen, who had to wait for hours before getting their cheques encashed.

They said people having ATM cards would be rid of the hassle of going to the bank of their account to withdraw cash after submitting cheques.

Assistant vice-president of a government bank, Hayat Mehsud, told Dawn on contact that there was a connectivity problem with the head office.

He said due to absence of signals ATMs could not identify ATM cards, and confirm authenticity and balance.
