From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: ‘Four great advantages’

A ROBUST optimism towards the economic future of Pakistan was expressed by Sir Archibald Rowlands in an exclusive to Dawn on the eve of his departure for England. The services of Sir Archibald were loaned to the Pakistan Government for three months by the British Government. As Financial Adviser to the Governor-General, Sir Archibald studied every aspect of the financial and industrial problems of the new Dominion and has submitted his recommendations to the Governor-General on these questions at the end of his term.

…“Pakistan is an agricultural country. But so were Canada, Australia, Argentina, and even the United States at one time. Pakistan has great natural resources which can be developed in the same way as other western countries have done,” said Sir Archibald.

“Pakistan,” he said, “starts on its career with four great advantages. First, it has an active and robust people. Secondly, it has a compact and stable political structure which is, unlike that of some other countries, free from fissiparous tendencies. Thirdly, it has plenty of the primary requirements of life, namely, food. Lastly, it has a favourable balance of trade with the outside world.”
