Licence of lawyer suspended

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Bar Council on Wednesday suspended a lawyer’s licence for contesting a trader body’s election.

The matter was taken by the KPBC executive committee in a meeting chaired by chairman Mohammad Ilyas Khan. The participants discussed different issues.

The meeting took notice of social media news that lawyer Waheed Hayat violated the law by running milk business in Nowshera district and running for the general secretary of the Anjuman-i-Tajiran Nowshera.

The committee suspended the lawyer’s licence and referred the matter to the council’s disciplinary committee for further action against him.

It also formally informed the Nowshera district and sessions judge and the Nowshera Bar Association’s president about the decision.

The participants approved the release of Rs6.4 million cheques to the legal heirs of lawyers, who died in the last three months, and those of Rs8.3 million to lawyers with disability.

They asked lawyers registered with the council to pay dues by Dec 31.

Meanwhile, new member of the KPBC Ali Zaman, has said he will work his fraternity across the province.

Mr Zaman, who is also the president of the Peshawar Bar Association, was notified as the member of the council by advocate general Shumail Ahmad Butt on Nov 28 as the council chairman. His notification came as a seat from Peshawar fell vacant after the death of senior lawyer Razaullah Khan.

Mr Zaman said three consultation rooms, and Benazir Bhutto Ladies Barroom and Insaf Ladies Barroom would be established in the old barroom on the premises of the district courts.

He said the Late Yousaf Riaz Khalil Block was being built to increase the number of lawyer chambers. He also announced that the Insaf Block would be called the Late Razaullah Khan Block.
