Asia, Ghalia clash in final

KARACHI, Dec 29: Trailing two sets down, fourth seed Asia Ikram Wapda, pulled off a major upset when she toppled top seed and team-mate, Louiza Irshad, in seven sets to cruise in the women’s singles final of the 43rd National table tennis championship at Islamia Club, on Thursday.

In another pre-final, unseeded Ghalia Khurshid dropped a set but chalked up a 4-1 win against Punjab’s Rabia. She was home 11-9, 11-4, 12-10, 6-11, 11-7.

The Asia-Luiza match turned out to be a keenly contested affair lasting 65-minutes. After making a shaky start losing the first two sets 4-11, 3-11, International Asia recovered to surge 3-2 ahead grabbing the next three sets 11-9, 11-6, 11-4. She again dropped the sixth 6-11 before winning the decisive 11-6.

The final between Asia and Ghalia will be played on Saturday.

Louiza later secured the bronze after she registered 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 5-11,14-12 victory against Rabia.

Her victory created uproar in the Punjab camp as their manager Shahid Baloch, was quick to lodge a written protest to the organising secretary alleging that the match was not played best of seven sets despite announcement by the referee before the match.

He requested that either the match should be replayed or both the players be declared third.

The men’s singles has reached the last eight stage. Those who advanced to quarterfinals includes Khawaja Kashif, Awais Hussain, Jahangir Khan, Saleem Abbas, Asim Aziz, Ali Faisal, Ahmed Hussain and Awais Mukhtar.

Experienced Bilal Yasin became the only casualty when he went down to un-seeded Asim Aziz 1-4.

Defending champion, Asim Qureshi and last year’s runners up, Kashif Razzak, have pulled out from the contest at the last moment. They were given No 1 and 2 seedings in the draw after their willingness to play for Punjab.
