DERA ISMAIL KHAN: The International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies head of emergency for Pakistan, Chiran Jiva Livera, said here the other day that IFRC had been striving to raise $55 million in donations the world over to help the victims of devastating floods in Pakistan.

Talking to mediapersons during his visit to the flood-affected areas in Dera Ismail Khan, he said the Pakistan Red Crescent Society was providing shelter, food, drinking water and free medical facilities to the flood victims in collaboration with the IFRC, International Committee of the Red Cross, Norwegian Red Cross and other movement partners.

“However, the flood-hit population needs more aid and we are taking steps to raise donations at the international level,” said Chiran Jiva Livera.

He said floods in Pakistan had badly affected people and the scale of relief and rehabilitation response needed to be increased.

“Therefore, the IFRC is working to raise $55 million in donations all over the world on the request of PRCS,” he said. The funds, he said, would be spent on the rehabilitation of flood victims in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh.

The Norwegian Red Cross head of international programmes Rothing Jakob also visited DI Khan. Both the IFRC representatives met provincial minister Faisal Amin Gandapur and Dera commissioner Amir Afaq. On this occasion, a briefing was given by PRCS, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the ongoing flood relief operations.
