TEACHERS AND SALARIES: As the prices of all commodities have increased, it is imperative to increase the salaries of teachers. A family with two or three schoolgoing children face great difficulty in paying their tuition fees along with utility bills. How can our teachers improve the standard of education when they are hand-to-mouth and unable to buy books and periodicals that may enrich their knowledge and, in turn, their lectures? The government should introduce a separate allowance for the purpose. It is only natural that employees deliver what is expected of them when they are satisfied with their wages.

TYPING ERROR: This is with reference to the letter ‘Putting record straight’ (Oct 14). which pointed out an error in my review of the book, A President, a Prime Minister and a Party. The mistake pointed out is valid as there was a typing error on my part, which made 1985 come across as 1995. I stand corrected.

WORLD CUP: Though the home series against England exposed the national team’s lack of intent, one hopes that the victory in the tri-series in New Zealand would have given it a boost ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Captain Babar Azam needs to energise the team a bit more and those failing to deliver time and again should face some sort of accountability.

POLL POSTPONEMENT: The local government elections have now been postponed indefinitely in Karachi; this time for want of security. Karachi, the seventh largest city in the world, has all but crumbled because of the criminal negligence of the administration.

There seems to be no effort to resolve the critical issues. The sole remedy lies in holding local government elections so that the power to address public issues can be delegated to public representatives at the grassroots level.
