From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: Nationalisation of schools

MURREE: The Central Education Minister, Mr Abdul Hafeez Pirzada, said today [Sept 21] that the nationalisation of private schools will start from October 1 and with this will begin the work of implementation of the new Education policy in full gear. Addressing a gathering at the Founder’s Day of Lawrence College, Ghora Gali, this evening, he said the Government has mustered sufficient resources to implement the new educational reforms and there should be no apprehensions on this count.

He said fears were expressed in certain quarters before the nationalisation of colleges that the Government would not be able to take this step because of the financial implications involved. But, he said, all private colleges in the Punjab and Sind have been already nationalised and it is a fact for anybody to see.

The Education Minister said education would be made free from the 1st to the 8th class this year, and this would involve a considerable financial responsibility which many of the private schools would not be able to shoulder. He said it was, therefore, necessary that the Government should step in and take up this responsibility. — News agencies
