Strike observed in Sindh against Kalabagh dam
HYDERABAD, Dec 20: A complete strike was observed in upper Sindh on Tuesday while there was a mixed response to the strike call given by the Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz in areas of Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar.
The strike by and large remained peaceful.
The JSQM had given the strike call against the proposed construction of the Kalabagh dam.
In Hyderabad and Latifabad, traffic remained thin. Areas in Qasimabad remained closed.
JSQM activists staged a rally in Tandojam.
Stones were pelted at some vehicles in Jamshoro, Tando Mohammad Khan, Matiari and Tando Allahyar districts, where a complete strike was observed.
In the Kotri taluka, a van was burnt and an attempt to burn a general store was foiled. In Jamshoro, no point buses plied for staff and students.
A tanker driver was injured in Tando Mohammad Khan when miscreants threw stones at his vehicles. Three people were injured when they were attacked in Qalandarabad Colony.
LARKANA: A complete strike was observed in Larkana and Qambar-Shahdadkot districts.
Activists of the JSQM and the Sindh National Front took out a procession and blocked the Indus Highway. Police baton-charged the protesters when they refused to clear the road. Four peopole were arrested for setting a rickshaw on fire.
Another procession terminated at the Pakistan chowk. Police baton-charged the protestors to disperse them.
Some JSQM workers stopped the Qalandar Express at the Larkana Railway station. Police later cleared the track.
In Qambar, a procession was taken.
A procession was also taken out in Shahdadkot which reached the Koto-moto chowk. The Shahda-dkot-Qabmar road was blocked.
A complete strike was observed in Ratodero where people took out processions and dem- onstrated outside the press club.
In Banguldero and Wagan, people blocked the Indus Highway.
Similar protests were also staged in Warah, Lalu Rounk and Qubo Saeed Khan.
THATTA: The strike call received a positive response here as business activities remained suspended. Main shopping centres and business centres in Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro, Mirpur Sakro, Jhoke, Daro and other towns remained closed and traffic remained thin.
DADU: A complete strike was observed in the district. Traffic remained suspended on Dadu-Jamshoro and Dadu-Moro roads.
Activists of the JSQM staged a rally in Mehar. They blocked a road in Mehar for two hours and also held a demonstration in the Qazi Arif town and took out a procession in Faridabad.
A shutter-down strike was observed in Sehwan, Bhan Syedabad town, Jamshoro, Sann and Manjhand towns.
NAWABSHAH: There were no business activities in various parts of Nawabshah.
Some people lit bonfires at different points in Nawabshah and Sakrand and furniture was burnt near the Edhi chowk.
JSQM activists took out a procession and held a demonstration in the Jam Saheb town.
People blocked the National Highway near Qazi Ahmad for more than one hour. Some miscreants exchanged fire with the Motorway police.
Police arrested 23 activists of nationalist parties.

KHAIRPUR: All bazaars, markets and trade centres remained closed and traffic remained suspended in the district.
A procession was taken out which marched through the National Highway, Panj Hatti chowk and the Shahi Bazaar.
A strike was observed in Gam- bat, Ranipur, Sobhodero, Pacca Chang and Thari Mirwah where people took out processions.
BADIN: A complete strike was observed in the district. Attendance in schools and government offices was low.
Police arrested six JSQM activists.
SHIKARPUR: All bazaars and trade centres remained closed in Shikarpur, Garhi Yasin, Khanpur, Chak, Madeji and Dakhan. Traffic remained thin.
In the Lakhi town, there was a partial strike.
Rallies were staged by JSQM and other nationalist parties in Shikarpur and other towns.
NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: A strike was observed in Naushahro Feroze, Moro, Kandiaro, Mithiani, Tharushah, Bhirya, Kandiaro, Halani, Phull, Darya Khan Mari and other small towns.
Activists of the JSQM, PPP, PPP-SB, STPP, SNP and the JSF took out a procession in Naushahro Feroze. There was a complete strike in Tharushah and a procession was taken out from the main chowk in Kandiaro.
Rallies were also staged in other towns of the district.
MIRPURKHAS: Main markets, bazaars and shopping centres remained open in the district.
In Rahim Nagar and on the Iqbal Road, some shops were found closed while traffic was normal.
Local JSQM leaders claimed that six activists were missing.
Police arrested four JSQM activists in Kot Ghulam Mohammad.
A sit-in was staged at 10-Mile, Mori.
There was mix response to the strike call in Digri. Business and shopping centres and bazaars in Umerkot remained closed while traffic was thin. Police nabbed two district JSQM office-bearers.
The Samaro town also remained closed.
JACOBABAD: A shutter-down strike was observed in the district. A procession was taken out which after marching through different roads of the city reached the Indus Highway. Police arrested two activists before dispersing the protesters.
