From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: Save Mohenjo-Daro

KARACHI: The President has appointed a “Save Mohenjo-Daro Committee” to consider ways and means for preserving this historic site which is threatened by salinity and waterlogging. The 11-member committee is headed by the former High Court Judge, Mr Feroz Ghulamally Nana. It will coordinate its efforts with UNESCO for the conservation of the site. — Staff reporter

[Meanwhile, as reported by news agencies in Srinagar,] Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, former occupied Kashmir Chief Minister and leader of the Plebiscite Front Party, today [July 4] ... said [at a public meeting in Sopore] last year’s evolution of Bangladesh had taught Kashmiris one important lesson — that once a group of people decide to secede from a country no amount of force can keep them down. The Sheikh ... asked Kashmiris not to depend on outside Powers like Pakistan or China but to create their own strength if they wanted to secure their objective of exercising their right of self-determination.

The Sheikh, who returned to held Kashmir ... after being banned from entering the state for more than 16 months by the Indian Government, asked Kashmiris to prepare for a long and slow struggle which would ... bring them to their goal.
