Tribute paid to Baloch poet

QUETTA: Rich tribute was paid to the Baloch poet, Mir Gul Khan Nasir Mengal, on his 108th anniversary at a seminar that brought together political and literary figures from different parts of Balochistan.

At the programme, which was organised to remember him and other literary personalities from Balochistan, Shama Perveen Magsi, Dr Ambreen Mengal, Jan Buledi, Waheed Zaheer and Dr Shako Mengal were present on the stage.

Some participants read out his Balochi and Brahui poetries to remember him on his anniversary.

“Although Gul Khan Nasir is long gone but his name is still alive,” said Ms Magsi, adding that there should be “a museum in his name to preserve and exhibit his literary works in Balochistan.”

Quetta-based writer, Dr Ambreen Mengal, said: “To understand Gul Khan’s poetry, one has to dive deep down into the sea of his poetry, which is about people, poor, working class, and against injustice.

“Once he went to rural parts of Nushki for hunting, but he was so fond of poetry that he brought home in his chador some stones on which he wrote couplets,” said Yar Jan Badini, who organized the event at Quetta Press Club.
