Volleyball: Wapda edge out fighting POF

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6: In the best match yet, Wapda edged a stubborn POF in the quarterfinals league of the 41st National Volleyball Championship at the Liaquat Gymnasium on Tuesday.

After being on court for almost two hours and a half, Wapda won by the skin of their teeth 31-33, 30-28, 25-22, 18-25, 19-17.

The victory in which Irfan Nawaz, Shahid and Abdur Raheem excelled, helped Wapda stay on track.

They will now play NWFP on Wednesday.

The boys from Frontier went down in straight sets in their match against defending champions Police who handed them a 25-19, 25- 16, 25-16 defeat.

The win came through the efforts of Ehsanullah Tipu, Kashif Mansoor, Naseer Ahmed and Amjad Hussain and put them in a clash with POF.

The visiting Indian Punjab side continued their winning ways with a 22-25, 25-18, 25-12, 25-20 defeat of Punjab.

Sarwan Singh, Roy Joseph, Gurwinder Singh and Harbir Singh shone with their skills. The Indians now face off Army in the second round of the quarterfinals league.

In another last-eight fixture, former champions Army defeated Airforce 25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, thanks to fine play by Zaheer Abbas, Bakht Risal, Muhammad Sakhi and Ishfaq Hussain.
