From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1972: Fifty Years Ago: Clashes in Kashmir

RAWALPINDI: Fresh clashes between Pakistan and Indian troops, resulting in casualties on both sides, have been reported from the northern areas and the Kashmir sector, following renewed Indian attempts to encroach upon Pakistan territory. A Ministry of Defence Press release, quoting latest reports ... said fighting was still continuing in the Kashmir and Lipa sectors. The UN observers have been fully apprised of the “serious situation created by the Indian Army,” the Press release said.

Another Press release of the Ministry earlier ... had said that Pakistan was lodging a strong protest with the Indian Government against these fresh violations of the cease-fire not only in Kashmir but also in the Lahore sector. Giving details of these incidents, which began on April 16 when the Indians intruded into the Chakoti area in the Kashmir sector, the two Press releases said the Indians have been using heavy artillery and mortar bombs in their attacks on Pakistani positions. In the Minimarg sector, north of the Cease-Fire Line in the northern area, the Indians encroached into Pakistan territory... . No official comment was available ... on the likely impact ... to restore durable peace... .
