From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1947: Seventy-five years ago: Gandhi’s advice to Hindus

ADDRESSING the prayer gather on Sunday [April 6] at Bhangi Colony, New Delhi, Mr. Gandhi drew their attention to the lovely Bengali bhajan to which they had been treated that evening as also to the Ramdhun, which included the names of both Rama and Rahim, Krishna and Karim. As these were being sung, he said, that the vista of Noakhali came before his eyes. … It grieved him to sense the existing hatred and spirit of revenge and warned them that unless they calmed and purified their hearts they would light such a fire throughout the land as would consume them all.

… Today Nationalist Muslims had been killed by Hindus in Bihar and Hindu friends of Islam had been done to death by Muslims. Mr. Gandhi exhorted the audience to pause and think where they were drifting. He begged of the Hindus not to harbour anger in their hearts against the Muslims even if the latter wanted to destroy them.
