Animal rights

LIKE humans, animals, too, have the right to live freely and without pain. Just because they cannot communicate as humans do, they should not be subjected to cruelty. It is sad to see that animals are not safe anywhere in the country. Whether they are confined to cages in zoos, roaming the streets or living in the wild, they are mistreated, teased and tortured by people for the sake of entertainment.

Stray dogs are often poisoned and tortured to death for no reason. More than 50,000 dogs die every year on the streets of Pakistan. Donkeys and horses are commonly used as working animals, forced to carry loads much heavier than their capacity.

Unfortunately, Pakistan has no laws to protect animals from cruelty and abuse. There is a dire need to raise awareness about animal rights. It is our responsibility to teach everyone to treat animals with kindness and compassion. We should provide food and set up small shelters for stray animals in the hidden areas of walkways so they too can live safely.

Moreover, the government also needs to do more to protect natural wildlife habitats. Just like humans, animals, too, are beautiful creatures and feel just as much pain and happiness. They deserve an equal right to enjoy a peaceful life.
