HYDERABAD: Sindh not to accept any dam on Indus: PONM

HYDERABAD, Dec 1: The Sindh Unity Council of the PONM has said the whole of the province will not accept any dam on the Indus river. A meeting of the Sindh chapter of the PONM was held here on Thursday with Dr Qadir Magsi, president of the chapter, in the chair.

The meeting condemned what it called the decision taken by President General Pervez Musharraf to go ahead with the Kalabagh dam.

It said the dam was tantamount to signing the death warrants of 40 million people of Sindh.

The meeting observed that the dam was more dangerous for Sindhis than the recent earthquake. It said that every child of Sindh would come out on roads if General Musharraf announced the construction of Kalabagh dam without the consent of Sindh, Balochistan and NWFP.

The meeting accused the general of working for only one province.

The meeting claimed that General Musharraf had no constitutional or moral right to rule over the country.

It demanded that both the Kalabagh dam and the greater Thal canal projects should be abandoned forever.

The meeting condemned the demolition of Sindhi villages in Karachi and demanded to regularize all the villages.

It also took serious notice of inordinate delay in holding the local body elections in the Ghotki district and termed it a conspiracy by the Sindh government to appoint a retired army officer as administrator of the district.

The meeting removed Qamar Bhatti from the post of PONM Sindh chapter general secretary and appointed Sindh Hari Committee president Azhar Jatoi in his place.

The former general secretary was accused of violating the decision of the PONM with regards to the formation of a new nationalist alliance.

Those who attended the meeting were Azizullah Bohio, the chief of Sindh Sagar Party, JUI Sindh chief Maulana Ubedullah Bhutto, Sindh Hari Committee president Azhar Khan Jatoi, JSM-Z leaders, Rasool Bux Thebo and Mansoor Khaskheli, and JSQPP leaders, Mohammad Khokhar and Dodo Deshi.
