LWMC imposes Rs1.3m fines for illegal waste disposal

LAHORE: The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) enforcement wing imposed Rs1.3 million fines over disposal of solid waste in violation of rules in different areas of the city since Jan 1.

The LWMC enforcement wing cracked down on different housing societies for illegal dumping of solid waste with the start of new year and registered four cases against violators. The wing also seized six vehicles being used for illegal waste dumping and served legal notices to their owners for ignoring its warnings seriously.

The company also approached the Safe City Authority for use of its cameras installed in the city to trace teh violators involved in illegal waste dumping.

LWMC Chief Executive Officer Ms Rafia Haider said all possible steps were being taken to keep Lahore clean.

She said those violating the laws and disposing off waste improperly would be taken to task.

She said since Jan 1 the LWMC teams inspected 6,241 places for any violation.

Ms Haider added that 788 challans were issued for littering and illegal waste dumping, besides 2,729 warning notices for minor violations and total fine of Rs1.3 million was imposed for violations of the Local Government Act.

She said she had been visiting the city early in the morning to ensure effective waste management services in the city.

The CEO said the mission of maintaining cleanliness in the city could not be achieved without cooperation from the public.
