NEW YORK: The veteran United States explorer, Anthony Fiala, advised of the despatch from Murmansk reporting the discovery in the Arctic seas of a message from the Baldwin Ziegler Polar Expedition in 1901-1902, told Reuter: “This is remarkable. I thought all messages would be gone by now.” This 77-year-old explorer, who was aboard the exploration ship “America”, said that a number of messages in buoys were dropped from balloons released from the vehicle. The “America” was lost off Rudolf Island … during the winter of 1902, when a rock ripped her bottom. The members of the expedition made a 200-mile sledge trek to one of their bases. There they awaited a relief vessel which reached them during the summer of 1905. One man died of anaemia… .

[Meanwhile, as reported from Karachi,] The port of Karachi will become one of the best major ports in the world when the post-war programme, estimated to cost nearly rupees two crores has been completed. The programme includes remodelling of the Keamari Yard and providing modern cranes, ship repairing and building yards, fishing harbour, dry dock and an up-to-date marine airport.
