Contented life

This refers to the article ‘The lamp of guidance’ (Oct 19) which, inter alia, said: “The Holy Prophet was the ruler of a nascent state, yet he lived like ordinary people and sought no special privileges for himself or his family members, other than love for his ‘close ones’ as ajr (reward) for his labours.” There are valid reasons to disagree with the content.

The Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) had all the financial resources in Madina, but adopted a simple and contented life out of choice, and avoided luxuries, again, out of choice; not because of financial constraints in the ‘nascent state’.

There are authentic accounts available in this regard across his life and such accounts have remained uncontested by any school of thought. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) lived a simple life and encouraged everyone, especially his own loved ones, to follow suit. A simple and contented life is in keeping with the spirit of the religion. Any other argument in this regard is simply misplaced.
