From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Indian offensive blunted

DACCA: THE Pakistan troops today [Nov 21] blunted a major offensive launched by regular Indian Army in two infantry brigades strength supported by one regiment of tanks in the north-west of Jessore, according to a report reaching here. The units belong to 1st Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and 4 Sikh Light of 350 Infantry Brigade. The invaders were successfully beaten back by Pakistan troops. The enemy suffered 90 killed and about 160 wounded. Pakistan casualties were 4 killed and 7 wounded. Seven enemy tanks were destroyed.... Today’s was the most serious of previous Indian incursions.

The Indian field guns, medium and heavy mortars continued shelling throughout the night. As the shelling stopped in the early morning, Indian Forces accompanied by their agents, attacked Pakistan positions supported by their armour. A fierce tank battle took place in which seven Indian tanks were destroyed. Indian forces failed to make any headway…. — News agencies

Mr. Fu Hao, [the] Chinese delegate ... said: “The question that has arisen in East Pakistan is purely Pakistan’s internal affair which can be settled by the Pakistan people themselves….”
