Protesting workers seek pay raise

KHYBER: Scores of daily wagers working in marble factories in Malagori area of Khyber tribal district staged a protest demonstration to seek raise in their wages.

Holding black flags and chanting slogans in support of their demands, the factory workers converged in the Sher Bridge area.

Speaking on the occasion, retired Subedar Sabz Ali said that majority of the poor labourers were finding it difficult to bear their domestic expenses due to a sharp increase in prices of daily use items.

He said that most of the marble workers were hugely indebted to the local shopkeepers as they were not able to pay the debts owing to low salaries.

The marble factory workers demanded an instant raise in their wages alongside provision of safety gears and medical allowance as a number of the workers received critical injuries while loading and unloading heavy stones and performing other duties at the factories.

POLICE STATION: The first-ever police station was opened in Bazaar-Zakhakhel area of Khyber tribal district.

A statement issued by the police centre in Shah Kas said that Seena Jan was appointed station house officer of the new police station. Subordinate staff was also deputed at the new police station.

The statement said that opening of the police station would facilitate the locals to register their complaints while saving them from travelling to Landi Kotal.

The newly deputed police would also help in establishing complete writ of law in Bazaar-Zakhakhel, area which was under the control of a so-called local peace committee.
