From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Last chance for E-Pakistan

LAHORE: Mr Nurul Amin, President, of the Democratic Party, said here today [Nov 13] that he was giving a warning in the interest of the nation that if this time somebody from East Pakistan was not entrusted with power Pakistan might never remain united.

Addressing the inaugural function of “the Pakistan Front”, he said … it seemed that East Pakistan might have a majority in the National Assembly and even in that case if East Pakistanis were not able to get power, their already deeply ingrained misgivings in this regard would increase further. The frustration in East Pakistan would mount and this might ultimately culminate in the break-up of Pakistan. The people of East Pakistan, he further said, would then think Sheikh Mujib was the real leader and that a conspiracy was hatched to keep him out of power. — News agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s staff correspondent in Karachi,] Mian Moham­mad Daultana, President Council Muslim Lea­gue, pointedly warned … Mr. Z. A. Bhutto … that “irresponsible, anti-democratic fascism” would never be allowed to hold sway in Pakistan. … Mr. Bhutto, he said, has seen what catastrophic experiences Pakistan has been going through and advised him that he (Bhutto) should not commit the blunder the Sheikh had committed. …
