35 beggars held in Peshawar crackdown

PESHAWAR: The Peshawar district administration on Wednesday arrested 35 beggars during its ongoing crackdown on vagrants.

A statement issued here said that the police had registered FIRs against the detained beggars under section 188 and other relevant provisions of the Local Government Act.

It said that the arrests were made from Ghanta Ghar, Khyber Bazaar, Qissa Khwani, Chowk Yadgar, Meena Bazaar and other parts of the city.

Meanwhile, the district administration on Wednesday also issued notices to a large number of beggars living in the makeshift huts on the Ring Road to vacate the area within next 24 hours, or strict legal action will be taken against them.

The authorities have also directed the vagrants to shift to their respective towns.

Earlier, the district administration had identified a total of 1,356 beggars, four contractors and 17 handlers, operating in the city. The administration has already detained the four contractors while FIRs have been registered against the handlers.
