One held as SU professor murder probe under way

KARACHI: Police on Saturday took into custody a man in connection with the killing of a Sindh University professor, who was gunned down on Friday night while resisting an apparent robbery bid.

Prof Dr Zainul Abideen Sodhar, 50, who was also a Hafiz-i-Quran and director of the Institute of Languages in SU, had come to Gulshan-i-Maymar to attend a religious gathering (milad).

A senior police officer said it was apparently a robbery related incident, as the family said that the robber snatched the cell phone of the victim, who was accompanied by his son, and shot him upon resistance. However, they did not snatch the cell phone of his son and escaped.

Investigators were also trying to determine as to where the incident had actually taken place. They said there was no blood inside the vehicle and the glasses were also intact.

The police took into custody a suspect for interrogation. They were waiting for the family to lodge an FIR to initiate formal investigation to ascertain the exact motive of the murder and identity of the culprits.

The victim professor originally hailed from Mehar in Dadu.
