Milk sellers raise prices on their own

ISLAMABAD: Milkmen have increased the prices of dairy products in the federal capital.

According to the rate list issued by Fresh Milk Association on Friday, loose milk is selling at Rs140 per litre and yogurt at Rs150 per kg. The rate of milk without fat is Rs120 per litre.

The increase in the price of milk has been attributed to the overall inflation and continuous rise in prices of packed milk and yogurt.

The latest increase was made without approval of the district administration.

The milk sellers have increased the prices twice in two months.

However, the local administration seems helpless in overcoming the problem.

The major chunk of milk being consumed in the federal capital is brought from other areas and towns and its transportation cost contributes to the rise of the prices.

Some milkmen said they were getting the commodity at higher rates from other towns which compelled them to sell milk and yogurt with a profit margin of Rs2 to Rs3.

β€œIt has become difficult to meet transportation charges for milk we get from other cities and towns,” said a milkman, Waris Ahmed.
