Teacher held over lack of security in school released

PESHAWAR: A government schoolteacher, who was arrested on Tuesday over his school’s insufficient security, was released on Wednesday, an official said.

Kotwali police had detained Azaz Ali Shah, a teacher of government primary school, Karimupura, under section 12 of the Sensitive and Vulnerable Places Security Act, 2015, over absence of proper security procedures at the school.

An FIR registered against the teacher stated that during the inspection of the school the personnel found neither the security cameras nor the SOS system as stipulated under the security procedure to alert the police in case of an emergency.

A source in the education department told Dawn that about two weeks ago secretary elementary and secondary education department had directed the educational institutions to approach the concerned district police officers and deputy commissioners for provision of security in the view of threats.

The source said many primary schools were lacking funds to install CCTV cameras and purchase other security equipment.

An official of the Kotwali police station denied arrest of any teacher.
