Fleeing robbers shoot policeman

ISLAMABAD: Two armed men shot and injured a policeman during a robbery on I.J. Principal Road on Tuesday, police said.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Industrial Area Zone Fida Satti told Dawn that a taxi driver was standing near an old toll plaza waiting for passengers.

Two persons riding a motorcycle reached there, held the taxi driver at gunpoint and snatched cash and a mobile phone from him.

Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) personnel, including Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Akram, were on duty near the spot.

After seeing the armed men, SI Akram rushed towards them in an official vehicle and hit them with it, the SP said.

The armed men fell on the road but opened fire on the police vehicle and then escaped leaving behind their motorcycle.

The SI sustained a bullet injury to his hand. After getting information, more police personnel reached the spot and cordoned off the area.

The injured was shifted to hospital where he was stated to be in stable condition.

The SP said details of the motorcycle left behind by the robbers had been obtained and a search launched to trace them.
