WORLD BANK REPORT: The World Bank’s decision to discontinue its ‘Doing Business Report’ is said to have irked many in the government. For those who have been monitoring the said report, the survey was always questionable, using unclear benchmarks, unrealistic parameters and even possibly engineered data. I am quite happy that it has been discontinued.

STRANGE NOISES: The strange noises recently heard from people in power about the possibility of granting amnesty to the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has taken many by surprise. How come a terrorist outfit be forgiven just like that? The mere talk about this sensitive issue is tantamount to rubbing salt into the wounds of those who lost their loved ones in suicide bombings and targeted killings. This wild idea will not be digested by the public so easily.

PLOT ALLOTMENT: The media spotlight was recently on the allotment of more than one plot of land to individuals by the Federal Government Employees Housing Authority (FGEHA). I served for 30 years in a federal government department in Islamabad and retired in 2011 in BPS-19. Every time a new sector was announced in Islamabad, I applied for a plot of land, but failed to get any. My name still appears on the list of FGEHA as a member, but I am denied allotment of any housing unit.

WATER THEFT: The farmers at the tail-end of Faiz Gunj Wah, Veeho Wah, Panhro Wah and Ali Nawaz Wah, taking off from Khairpur East Main Canal, are facing extreme water shortage at Faiz Gunj taluka in Khairpur Mirs district. More than 100 illegal watercourses are built on these four canals. The corrupt irrigation officials act like puppets to local politicians. The relevant authorities should take strict and urgent action in this regard.
