Unido to help steel mill manage energy losses

ISLAMABAD: The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (Unido) has provided technical assistance to an Islamabad-based steel mill to adopt advanced intelligent energy monitoring and management system that will help manage energy losses in the industry.

The ‘EnergEyer’ project was a collaborative initiative of the National University of Sciences and Technology (Nust) and Fazal Steel, for which Unido provided technical support.

Principal Investigator of Nust, Dr Iftikhar Ahmad while explaining the project said that EnergEyer was specially developed by Nust team for process industries by incorporating the concepts of Artificial Intelligence (AI), wireless communication, and cloud computing in the conventional Energy Management System (EMS), to manage the energy losses in the industry.

Nust Pro-Rector, Air Vice Marshal Dr Rizwan Riaz, while speaking at the inauguration of the project on Friday, thanked FSL Group of companies for facilitating and investing in this research which would help bring the advanced technology on a national platform. He also appreciated Unido to join hands with Nust for the initiative.

Unido National Project Manager Masroor Ahmed Khan said Unido in Pakistan had an extensive and successful portfolio in industrial development cooperation, and under one of its flagship projects, it provided technical support to the steel mill in its goal to achieve energy management system certification.

Earlier, Saad Aziz Malik of FSL group termed the project a huge step towards encouraging the industry-academia relationship that would help the country become self-reliant nation rather than importing technologies from abroad.
