From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: India beaten back

DACCA: Pakistani troops beat back an attack by about 300 armed personnel in Khanjanpur area in Rajshahi district inflicting heavy casualties on the aggressors on Monday last [Sept 13]. They killed 60 and arrested 22 infiltrators. A large amount of arms and ammunition was also captured. According to details available in Dacca, Indian artillery lobbed over 200 field gun and mortar shells, into Khanjanpur and two adjoining localities about one mile inside Pakistan territory ... on the night between Sunday and Monday.

The shelling was followed by a physical attack by nearly 300 armed persons including soldiers from the 77th Battalion of the Indian Border Security Force and their East Pakistani collaborators now in India. The vigilant Pakistani troops guarding the border took them out as soon as they crossed into Pakistani territory. — Agencies

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s staff correspondent from Dacca,] The East Pakistan Governor, Dr. A.M. Malik, today [Sept 14] held out a solemn assurance ... that ... “I shall do everything possible to restore a climate of security and confidence” in the province. In a broadcast to the people from Radio Pakistan … Governor Malik described his Government as caretaker and not an interim one.
