Punjab Museum revamp on the cards

LAHORE: The Punjab Institute of Language, Art and Culture (PILAC) is set to revamp its Punjab Museum by adding artifacts and improving other facilities.

PILAC Director General Dr Sughra Sadaf told Dawn on Sunday that efforts were being made to improve the museum and make it a happening place. She said a meeting of the PILAC Executive Committee would be held next week to finalise the initiatives.

“The museum represents a vibrant culture and needs focus since literary figures, historians, students and other people visit it. There had been constant efforts for years to maintain the quality of the museum; teams were sent to various districts in 2008 to gather information about Punjab’s antiquities which got completed in a year’s time,” she said.

She said PILAC was also contacting Punjabi literary organisations and requesting their office-bearers to get these registered for an inter-woven cultural approach.

The PILAC DG said a curator would be employed for the art gallery where the exhibitions of young artists were held. “We have sent letters to the art institutions to send the students to display their works free of cost,” she said.

Dr Sadaf said teams of research officers and their assistants who visited districts in the first phase of the initiative had completed their work. The idea behind this exercise was to reserve corners at the museum to represent every part of Punjab through local artifacts and antiquities.
