From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: Bhutto urges power transfer

There was no issue of the newspaper on September 12, 1971, on account of Quaid-i-Azam’s death anniversary. The following excerpts have been taken from the previous day’s issue.

KARACHI: …Mr Z.A. Bhutto has said that the only way to overcome the national crisis is to … transfer power to the elected representatives. He said that the Quaid-i-Azam had wished to adopt Islamic Socialism … and the PPP was only trying to follow in his footsteps.

… “Because of certain self-seekers and those having vested interests, the country is today … going through the gravest … crisis of its existence and the only solution to this can be possible if people are taken into confidence and power is transferred to their elected representatives.” — Staff correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s correspondent from Peshawar,] Following the decision to form coalition by three parties, namely the NAP, Jamiatul Ulema-i-Islam and PPP, in the NWFP legislature four Independent members of the Provincial Assembly are most likely to align themselves with the coalition and support it when a representative political Government is formed. … Informed sources told Dawn that the Independent members are regularly contacting the leaders of the coalition….
