DACCA: President Gen Agha Muhammad Yahya Khan has urged the banking and financial community to provide ideas and means of accelerating the process of development in East Pakistan. In a message to the conference of chief executives of banks and financial institutions opening in Dacca tomorrow [Aug 2] … the President said he was glad to know that they were meeting and reviewing the economic situation in East Pakistan and [devising] ways … [of] accelerating the process of economic development in the province.

[Meanwhile, as reported by the newspaper’s staff correspondent in Karachi,] Professor Abdus Salam, Scientific Adviser to the President said … [that] more financial allocations are needed for research at the 14 universities and various research councils. He said the UN International Centre for Theoretical Physics at Trieste … of which he is the Director, is spending Rs. 50 lakh a year on research on one subject only. In an interview the Professor said that the country cannot accomplish anything in the field of science unless it is properly financed. …
