Defaulter sugar mills’ bid to steal stock foiled

KASUR: The tehsil Chunian administration foiled the theft of hundreds of sugar bags stocked at the Brothers Sugar Mills Chunian on Sunday.

The Chunian assistant commissioner got eight people arrested and impounded four trucks loaded with sugars bags.

Brothers Sugar Mills is owned by the close relative of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. The mills is defaulter of about Rs6 billion, including Rs840 millions on cane growers’ dues.

The Lahore High Court, in 2016, had ordered the cane commissioner to seal the mills while the apex court had ordered the auction of the mills last year. The mill’s possession was handed over to the Punjab government to safeguard sugar stock, machinery and other valuables there.

Following a tip of AC Chunian Rizwanul Haq along with a heavy contingent of police, foiled the theft of sugar bags the godown of mills. Police also arrested drivers of the trucks. The Ac, however, ordered unloading of the sugar bags.

Locals and farmers had complained about the theft from the mills several times but the administration denied the reports.
