PESHAWAR: The Water and Sanitation Services Peshawar (WSSP) has disposed of 10,640 tons offal during three Eid days.

The waste disposal operation was inaugurated by special assistant to the chief minister on information Kamran Bangash on Wednesday.

According to the WSSP, 2,602 sanitation workers participated in the activity, which was monitored by MNA Arbab Sher Ali, MPA Kamran Bangash, additional deputy commissioner Gul Bano, WSSP chief executive Dr Hassan Nasir and general manager (operations) Riaz Ahmad Khan.

Besides field staff, the company also cancelled the duties of the management staff and assigned them zones to monitor the operation and help field staff identify points for waste clearance.

MNA Arbab Sher Ali inspected sanitation work in his constituency and appreciated the company’s performance.

According to the WSSP, it used lime to disinfect the animal waste and dumped it in the soil at a designated site in Shamshato area. The area in and around the site was fumigated afterward.

According to data collected from the four zonal offices, the WSSP disposed 4,444 tons of offal on the first Eid day, 4,292 tons on the second and 1,904 tons on the third.

The company deployed 566 vehicles, including 310 own and the rest private ones.

Of 6,202 staff members, 1,189 were sanitation workers, 660 katta qulis, 341 drivers, 293 helpers, 63 municipal inspectors and 55 supervisors.

The company said teams of community development officers had organised corner meetings to spread awareness among masses to dump waste at designated points.

“The ulema, teachers, elders and people from all walks of life were engaged, who also helped the sanitation operation successfully, while biodegradable shopping bags were distributed among the people for packing the offal and placing them at designated points,” it said.

The company said it set up 427 primary collection points and 16 transfer stations throughout the city.

WSSP chief executive officer Dr Hassan Nasir lauded the efforts of his team and thanked the residents for their cooperation.
