RAWALPINDI: As many as 13,845 tonnes of offal and animal waste were collected during the three days of Eid from the city and cantonment areas and shifted to landfill sites.

The Rawalpindi Waste Management Company (RWMC) alone shifted more than 9,500 tonnes of offal and animal waste from the district to the landfill site in Losar near Adiala village.

Deputy Commissioner Aamir Aqiq Khan told Dawn that the biggest cleanliness operation was launched in Rawalpindi on Eidul Azha. On Friday, RWMC Managing Director Awais Manzoor Tarrar visited complaint camps and transfer stations to monitor the cleanliness operation on the final day and inspected different areas.

As many as 3,539 workers took part in the operation with 413 vehicles deployed. A total of 53 transfer stations were established at various locations of Rawalpindi and Murree where offal, entrails and other wastes of sacrificial animals were temporarily dumped and then shifted in dumper trucks.

Eight complaint camps were set up a day before and during Eid days in Rawalpindi, Taxila, Gujar Khan, Kallar Syedan, Kahuta and Murree to receive complaints about cleanliness while waste bags and awareness material were distributed.

On the last day, the transfer stations were completely cleaned while roads were washed with the help of the company’s mechanical sweeper and washer. Streets, mosques, imambargahs and collective sacrificial points were also cleaned and sanitised with phenyl. The entire operation was supervised and monitored by the senior manager operations to ensure timely collection and proper disposal of offal.

Meanwhile, Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) lifted 4,345 tonnes of animal waste from the cantonment areas during Eidul Azha.

RCB spokesman Qaiser Mehmood told Dawn that 800 sanitary workers took part in the cleanliness drive and shifted animal waste from residential areas to the landfill site on Chakri Road.

He said 830 complaints were received during the last three days and all were redressed within a few hours.

RCB Cantonment Executive Officer Umer Farooq Ali Malik on Friday visited different areas to check whether the cleanliness operation had been successfully conducted.

He expressed satisfaction over the work done by the sanitary workers and appreciated them.
