News need follow-ups

THIS refers to two reports published in late May, ‘Probe begins into anchoring of ship with dangerous chemicals at Gadani’ (May 27) and ‘Probe team inspects ship loaded with dangerous chemicals at Gadani’ (May 31). It is frustrating that no media outlet has run any update on such a serious matter. The ship, carrying some hazardous chemicals, was anchored at the Gadani ship-breaking yard despite a clear warning by the International Criminal Police Organisation, commonly known as Interpol. The ship was said to contain tonnes of mercury-mixed oil.

India and Bangladesh had not allowed the ship at their docks, while some selfish Pakistanis did not hesitate to allow the ship to be anchored in our waters with utter disregard for national and international regulations.

Later, the plot where the ship had been anchored for scrapping was sealed and investigations were ordered. But no update has been shared with the citizens since then; neither any official clarification has been produced, nor any follow-up story has been done by the media. This depicts lack of seriousness regarding national issues.

If dramas, movies and domestic leagues are necessary for the entertainment of the nation, a follow-up report on issues of national interest is equally important for the safety and security of the country.
