From the past pages of dawn: 1971: Fifty years ago: ‘Yahya had no choice’

RAWALPINDI: Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah has said that in expressing its sympathy for the so called “Bangla Desh”, India has forgotten the role it has itself been playing in Kashmir for the last 23 years, India has persistently denied the right of self-determination to the Kashmiris. In a newspaper interview, he said this conflict of words and deeds in the Indian attitude, provides food for thought for all freedom loving people. … Commenting on the action taken by President Yahya Khan in East Pakistan, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah said the President was left with no choice but to do what he did to save his country’s unity and integrity. — Radio Pakistan

[Agencies add from Rawalpindi,] The Government of Pakistan today [May 31] lifted censorship on all outgoing dispatches.

[Meanwhile,] An official spokesman ... said: “It has been observed that people are holding meetings without prior approval of the competent authorities. These meetings actually contravene Martial Law regulation No. 76. The public is advised to organise or hold such meetings after obtaining permission from the authorities concerned. The Rules lay down that application for the grant of permission to hold meeting should be submitted at least three days before the scheduled date of the meeting to Sub-Martial Law authority Zone “D”.”
