Police open gender protection unit

ISLAMABAD: The capital police have launched a gender protection unit to help women and children victims of sexual harassment, rape and bonded labour.

A statement on Friday said Inspector General Police (IGP) Qazi Jamilur Rehman inaugurated the unit at the facilitation centre in F-6.

Speaking on the occasion, he said well-trained female police staff had been deployed at the desk. The medical staff, including a psychiatrist, will provide assistance to the affected women and children.

The IGP said there was a need to devise a mechanism to provide all needed facilities to the victims of oppression under one roof.

He said a help number - 8090 - would be available round the clock to approach the police.

The police have set up the unit and the helpline to provide immediate assistance to women and children facing injustice, the IGP said.
