From the past pages of Dawn: 1946: Seventy-five years ago: Jinnah-Nehru talks

THURSDAY’S [May 9] series of eventful meetings of the leaders of the two major political parties with the Viceroy and the members of the Cabinet Mission culminated in two dramatic official announcements, namely, that the present Executive Councillors including the Commander-in-Chief are ready to make room for the new caretaker Interim Government and that the Tripartite Conference resulted in a meeting between Mr. Jinnah, the President of the All-India Muslim League, and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the President-elect of the Congress, writes the political correspondent of the A.P.I.

…While the broad outlines of the new Interim Government which Indian political parties want to function as the Provisional Government of a free India, were discussed during the interviews between the party leaders and the Viceroy, it is learnt that details … have not yet been discussed. …The Cabinet Mission succeeded on Thursday, for the first time since the commencement of the present series of interviews, in bringing about a personal meeting between … Mr. Jinnah and … Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This move is welcomed in all circles particularly in view of the criticism heard in certain quarters that hitherto the two delegations have been talking to the Cabinet Mission rather than talking to each other…
