KARACHI: Transporters told not to overcharge

KARACHI, Oct 17: Sindh Transport Minister Adil Siddiqi has warned goods transporters that the government would take over the management if they continued to overcharge the transportation of relief goods being sent to earthquake-hit areas.

Presiding over an emergency meeting with transporters at Sindh Assembly’s committee room, the minister observed that in this moment of trial when there was an emergency situation all over the country, a clique of transporters having vested interests was taking undue advantage by overcharging the northern areas-bound people and relief cargo.

He set up a 10-member committee of the government and transporters’ representatives to take stock of the whole situation.

The committee will examine the issuance of special certificate or NOC to relief goods carriers from Karachi and the interior of Sindh so that they may not face any problem on highways. Besides, he said, the Motorway Police would provide them all cooperation and facility. —APP
