From the past pages dawn: 1946: Seventy-five years ago: Nawabzada’s warning

NAWABZADA Liaquat Ali Khan, General Secretary of the All-India Muslim League and convener of the Central Muslim League Parliamentary Board addressing a large public meeting on Wednesday … [March 6] in Lahore … said that “grave consequences will follow if non-Muslim League Government is forced upon the Punjab,” says A.P.A.

The Nawabzada declared: “It is Muslims’ right to form Government in the Punjab. They cannot tolerate a non-Muslim League Government which does not command confidence of Muslims to be forced upon them. I want to tell my Hindu and Sikh brethren that they will be committing a serious blunder if they form a Ministry which does not command confidence of Muslims,” he said. The Muslim League leader added: “The Punjab is a Muslim Province and if some people think that they can rule over them they are sadly mistaken.”

…[The] Nawabzada said: “The Leader of the Muslim League Assembly Party, the Nawab Saheb of Mamdot has the support of 88 members, 78 Muslim League members and 10 non-Muslim members, who have pledged their support to the Muslim League Party. Given the opportunity to form a Government, he is in a position to form a stable Ministry….”
