Excessive water supply riles farmers

FAISALABAD: Farmers normally used to protest for water supply to irrigate their fields; however, growers of Mamunkanjan on Monday staged a demonstration against the irrigation department for releasing water in a closed watercourse which damaged their crops.

Farmers of Chak 558-GB, Kilianwala, turned up for protest after finding water in their wheat, maize, vegetables and watermelon fields.

Talking to reporters, they said the irrigation department released water in the closed watercourse and the water flowed into their fields damaging their watermelon crop.

Farmers say they no longer need water but now the department has released a plenty of water in the watercourse that has been lying dry for a long time.

They have demanded that the deputy commissioner and the officials of irrigation department reduce the amount of water in this watercourse so that they could avail the facility for their crops in future.
