Apolitical senators

IDEALLY speaking, the senators should not be from any political party in order to keep the upper house depoliticised as they must be impartial in the performance of vital tasks of national significance.

An ideal person for Senate should be aged between 40 and 75 years, be credible and retired, and be fit of mind and body.

Members of the Senate can be former superior court judges, attorneys, university chancellors, registrars, professors, deans, army generals, services chiefs, senior bureaucrats, presidents of chambers of commerce, clergy etc. Half of those may be women.

WHILE considering the Senate election case, the Supreme Court may also like to consider the utility of the senators keeping in view their attendance record and performance for the welfare of the people in the light of taxpayers’ money being spent on them year after year.

Furthermore, the justification of fabulous pay and perks of the senators may also be examined which is in contrast to the minimum monthly wage designated for the common man.
