From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1971: Fifty Years Ago: NA summoned at Dacca

RAWALPINDI: The President has summoned the National Assembly on March 3 at 9 a.m. in the Provincial Assembly Building at Dacca. … The official announcement brings to end the atmosphere of uncertainty.... The general impression here during the past few days was that the political parleys for a consensus on constitutional issues had run into a blind alley. Conjectural readings of the situation had led to wild speculations everywhere.... Even now the impression is that the Assembly will meet without any significant understanding between the major political parties on the main issues.

…The Legal Framework Order under which the elections were held and the Assembly has been created however, does not require any consensus and has left it entirely for the Assembly itself to evolve the voting procedure. The two major parties are however still having separate talks with the smaller groups in the Assembly.

[Meanwhile, as reported by a correspondent in Karachi,] Four big woollen, silk and textile mills in the SITE area here were seized by about 3,000 workers ... in an unprecedented move to have their demands accepted by the respective managements. The workers were peacefully running the seized mills to their full capacity after forcing the administrative staff out of the premises and locking the gates from within.
